The wonderful world of white vinegar

I know the title is horribly dull, but cleaning is one of my big hobbies. And this is, after all, my hobby blog!

It gives me an instant sense of satisfaction, and I can do it anytime and anywhere.

Recently, I've been experimenting with various natural extracts in my cleaning, and I've found that a lot of the dirty, grimy jobs I need done around the house can be easily handled with a bit of white vinegar, some scouring powder, a sponge and baking soda. Miraculous!

Some people might already know all this, but I am just finding out about this miracle substance.

So I'd like to share my list of things I've found you can do with vinegar here, for other cleaning obsessed people like myself. Try it yourself at home.

A cheap bottle of white vinegar can be used to:

1.  Clean your personal computer: I hate cleaning in between the keys of my laptop, so I got around that by soaking a Q-tip in a water/vinegar solution and got in those annoying small and twisty spaces. Hallelujah! Solution is 2 cups water with 2 cups vinegar. Soak a soft cloth in this and squeeze as much fluid out as you can. Wipe down your CPU, UPS, and mouse to stay germ-free.

2.  Clean your bathroom: Nothing kills limescale like vinegar. Use it on the walls and floor of your bathroom.

3.  To remove mildew: This was a real lifesaver last month when I got my old white shirt out of storage and had to spruce it up to wear to church. Make a solution of 1tsp of white vinegar + 3tsp of water, dip a cotton ball in it. Squeeze out excess fluid and wipe off mildew stain. Air garment to dry. Gross tip: It also does wonders for those awful underarm sweat and deodorant stains!

4.  Clean, deodorise and disinfect your drain: Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, then 2 cups of vinegar. Wait for 20 minutes, then pour 2 litres of boiling water down the drain. follow with 1 litre of room temperature water.

5.  Freshen the air: Pour white vinegar into a saucer or flat plate until almost full. close all windows, place saucer on the floor in the center of the room and shut the door firmly. open door in 6 hours. If odor still lingers, replace vinegar and wait another 6 hours. this never fails me!

6.  Remove bumper stickers: Dab raw white vinegar into sticker until its soaked, then scrape off with the edge of an expired ATM card. Soak any gum residue with more vinegar and repeat until satisfied.

7.  Deodorise lunch boxes and car boots: Soak 1 slice of white bread in raw vinegar and leave in the lunchbox or boot overnight.

8.   Clean your microwave oven: Pour 2tsp of vinegar in half a cup of water, mix. Place in microwave on highest setting for about 5minutes. Wait another 5 minutes and open. Soak soft cloth in solution and wipe down the inside of oven. Leave door open to dissipate the fumes.

Well, that's it! I'm sure there are so many other wonderful uses for this all purpose liquid besides these, so feel free to explore on your own. I used it last week to rinse my sun dried tomatoes!
maybe that should be my next post? How to make your own sun dried tomatoes?

Hmmm...

Peace and blessings.

Baby blanket finished!

Big reveal time!
I finally finished the diagonal granny baby blanket I was working on for my friend, Cathy.
A few fast facts about this chocolate-hued beauty...
  • Because Mom and Dad are being all hush hush about the gender, she decided to go with a neutral palette of her own favourite colours, i.e. any shade of brown!
  • I personally loathe brown, but I think this blanket may have changed my thinking. Generous dashes of caramel, coffee, and cream stripes have made this a delight to work on, and though it dragged on a bit towards the end, I LOVED it by the time I was done. I now want one for my own bed!
  • Dimensions: approximately 42inches by 36inches.
  • With such warm stripes, I only needed a simple 2 row border of single crochet sticthes to finish.
  • I killed the border with a wet towel and a steam iron. for more information on "killing" acrylic yarn, see my post here
  • The blanket, a few hours old...

And here it is, in all it's glory...

Well, its glory is slightly diminished by the bad lighting and the fact that I took the photo at night indoors, but you get the general idea (you should still ooh! and aah! This took me a few days to finish!)

In fact, I've fallen so hard, and so fast for this chocolate blanket, that i just had to make it the blog header....we can go back to the torquoise couch next week, thanks very much!
And if you feel inspired enough by the gorgeous mix of retro (granny stitches) and modern (diagonal) to try making this yourself, please see this blog to learn how. I got the idea from her, did some calculations, and started hooking away!
Peace and blessings!

So sorry

I apologise for neglecting this blog for so long.
I've been ill, and going through a very bad time recently.
Stress, exhaustion, having to deal with the death of a dear, dear friend, and just general depression have had me down for about 2 weeks.
But I'm getting better now.
The sun has come out from behind the clouds and I can see a way through the whole mess now.
Thank you for your patience; I really appreciate it.
Just stay with me, and I promise I'll have something wonderful for you soon, ok?
Blessings!
